In 1991, a solo endeavourer was undertaken by the black metal band Burzum. Varg Vikernes was the one that was responsible for this. He was formerly known as Count Grisnackh Vikernes and is now in prison. He was charged with murder and committing arson. He was the one that was important in the creation of the earlier sounds of black metal. It came about because of the media attention that Vikernes got when he murdered his former band companion.

The dark sounds of this music changed since the beginning when it was more of a black metal sound that was very raw and unformed. It has changed to a music that is characterized by ambience and repeated hypnosis and a structure of lyrics that is very simple in nature. The sounds of Vikernes have been related to a pagan spell. He claims that each one of the albums he has created is under a spell. The magic of the music is at the very beginning song. This gets the listener ready by getting them into a trace like state. The last song on the album is designed to bring the listener into a fantasy world.
The fantasy world is created to escape the real world that he is so disconnected from.

Vikernes went to prison for murdering Osteen Aarseth. Aarseth was a former musician. Vikernes is also serving time for setting fire to a couple of Norwegian churches that have ancestral roots. He is suspected of being involved in some other activities and was planning to burn another church down when he was taken into custody. The police found that he had explosives in his residence. Vikernes claimed that the police set him up for the churches and that he did not get involved in such things. He was granted a release from jail for one week in the year 2004. He did not come back when he was due. Vikernes was arrested with a gun and fake passport in a car that was found to be stolen. He is serving thirteen more months on his sentence for these crimes.
