Candlemass is a doom metal band that comes from Stockholm, Sweden. It was created in the eighties by a man named Leif Edling. He played bass guitar. He was also the leader of the band and the songwriter. He had been with a band called Nemesis before starting Candlemass. Their first album came out in 1986. The name of that album was Epicus Doomicus Metallicus. This was probably one of the greatest stepping stones into the world of doom metal that was ever produced. There were five artists that worked on that particular album. They are Leif Edling who played bass. Matz Ekström who was the one who played the drums. Mats Mappe Björkman played on the regular guitar. Johann Lanquist was on lead vocals and Klas Bergwall on the lead guitar.
The next album that they created was known as Nightfall. This album came out in 1987. This was thought to be the greatest doom album that was ever made. For this album, you had a few new members in the mix. Next came Ancient Dreams and Tales Of Creation. They were one year apart with the first in 1988 and the other one to follow in 1989. In the Early nineties, the band released their live album. Changes would then be made again in the group’s artists. Marcolin decided it was time to leave and Tomas Vikström came in to begin to take over on lead vocals.
In 1992, the band recorded another album titled Chapter VI. This album was the cause of the group breaking apart. It did not do well at all. By the time 2002 rolled around, the group had finally decided to come back together. They did some live shows and made another live album to be released. Candlemass broke apart again after working on some of the re-mastered albums. They could not get along with each other. In 2004, the band came together again and recorded a brand new album. They named it Candlemass after the band. May of “05 was the release for that album. It won the band a Swedish Grammy.
The group’s vocalist Messiah was not sure of whether or not he was staying with the group. He finally decided to leave for good in 2007. They now have lead vocalist Robert Lowe. The band is currently working on some new music and is still together.
