Death metal is a specific sub-category of metal where almost every band sounds the same and originality is a trait that is hard to come across. Already considered veterans of the game, New York based band Immolation never had a problem with setting themselves apart from the pack. Their seventh full length album entitled Shadows in the Light is no exception.

The album is an overwhelming combination of uniqueness and viciousness. The songs on the album may not be as experimental as that of their sixth album but are arranged in complex and unusual manners. Despite the complexities of the sound with guitar interplay and dissonant riffs, the overall rhythm is never lost especially when you get the outstanding and clever harmonies of Robert Vigna and Bill Taylor.

The album is full of hard hitting beats without having to compromise a great amount of catchy hooks. Despite having the vocals of Ross Dolan having prominent growls that are characteristic to death metal, they are quite understandable without losing the anger that the songs require.

Given all of that, saying that Immolation is a great death metal band is a big understatement. The band can be considered to be one of the more underrated groups in the world of death metal. With the great amount of originality, creativity and emotion put into it, Shadows in the light is not only an incredible addition to their remarkable discography, the album is also a great addition to the music collection of any metal lover.
