Dream Theater Goes Back to Their Roots

To prove to critics who say that they’re not a heavy metal band, progressive metal band Dream Theater goes back to their roots for their tenth album.

The members of the group went into the studio last fall and recorded songs for what could be the band’s heaviest record since they began. Dream Theater signed a deal with Roadrunner Records only days before the final mix of the record was complete. Systematic Chaos will be released on the fifth of June.

When asked about the impending release, guitarist Petrucci says this: "We just wanted to make it filled with all the elements that make our band unique. Those are the obvious mixture of progressive rock and metal and keeping it mysterious, an anything goes philosophy. We wanted to have a lot of epic pieces on there, a lot of playing, a lot of shredding, but at the same time making the songs really strong and the melodies really strong. If there's anything we didn't want to do, it was anything that was too light… we wanted to keep it mysterious, and I really think it came out good. I think we stuck to that goal."

The band’s desire to move away from the mainstream sound can be due to their lack of credibility in the metal realm. Naysayers have always scoffed at the idea that Dream Theater can be classified as a heavy metal band. But Petrucci does not let what is said about them affect him. He’s confident about where they stand when it comes to their music.

In support of the new record, Dream Theater will hit the European music festivals in June and then launch a North American tour in July.
