The End of Strapping Young Lad

In a recent interview with Strapping Young lad’s Devin Townsend, he explains why he delivered a knock to the head that is Strapping Young Lad.

He says that the main reason that he’s bowing out of the band is integrity. It was not for any altruistic reason but rather due to a fear of success. He explains that fear by saying that he’d rather have fun and hang out with friends while making good music rather than to do another album with another contract keeping him there.

But with black metal bands like Emperor and Immortal who have parted ways, get offers out of the blue, reform and headline music fests, we’re all left to wonder if and when he gets an offer to regroup, would he do it? With great uncertainty, he says that he hopes that he will be able to reject the offer and that the only way for him to go back is if his kids are starving.

When asked about future projects, he is leaning towards ambient music. The idea is that he’s not looking to tone down things but rather just not as brutal as that of Strapping Young Lad’s sound. He further explains that he wants to do something without a whole battalion of people analyzing it and dictating what he should do.

Basically, he’s now looking out for number one and what he wants rather than what a whole group of people wants him to do. It’s all about having fun and being contented with that rather than aiming for something higher than what he previously had only to find out that it’s not all that great.
