The Heavy Metal movie begins with a scene of an astronaut piloting a futuristic car through the sky toward Earth. He parks in front of a mansion where his daughter greets him at the door. The astronaut shows her a glowing, green orb that he brought with him. However, the orb disintegrates the astronaut and takes his daughter captive. It tells her that it is “Loc-Nur, the sum of all evil.” It then forces her to watch stories of it's past .
The first story of the Heavy Metal movie involves Harry Canyon, a New York cab driver in the distant future. As he is driving past a museum, Harry witnesses the murder of an archeologist who recently discovered Loc-Nur. The murdered man's daughter is chased by the mobster's who killed her father, and takes refuge in Harry's cab. She and Harry later devise a plan to sell Loc-Nur and split the proceeds. However, Harry kills the girl at the end when greed motivates her to betray him.
In the second Heavy Metal Movie segment, a geeky teenager finds a glowing, green meteorite which transports him into the mystical land of Neverwhere. Once he is transported, he becomes a handsome, muscular warrior known as Den. Den rescues Katherine Wells, a beatiful woman who was also transported from Earth, from an evil queen who plans to use her as a human sacrifice.
Den and Katherine are then captured by Ard, who wants to use Loc-Nur to rule the world. He holds Katherine hostage in order to force Den to steal Loc-Nur from the queen. In the end, Ard and the queen are transported to another world while they are fighting over Loc-Nur. Den and Katherine decide that they will be happier in Neverwhere than they would be if they returned to Earth.
The third segment takes place in an intergalactic courtroom during the trial of Captain Sternn. Sternn is guilty of numerous crimes, but he pleads not guilty because he has bribed a man named Hannover Fiste to act as a character witness. Before entering the courtroom, Fiste picks up a green marble that looks like a tiny version of Loc-Nur.
Throughout the trial, he fidgets with the marble. During his testimony, Fiste exhibits schizophrenic behavior. He starts lying about Sternn's character, but his voice gets deeper and he begins speaking against Sternn instead. Fiste gradually undergoes a physical transformation until he is an enraged, muscular brute. He smashes the witness stand and chases Sternn through the space station corridors. When Fiste corners Sternn, Sternn pays him for executing the escape plan. Fiste then shrinks back to normal, and Sternn betrays him by opening a trap door that sends him into space.
The next Heavy Metal Movie segment involves a B17 bomber in World War II. The bomber is on it's way home after sustaining heavy damage in a battle. Loc-Nur collides with the air plane in mid air. Most of the crew is killed. They are later turned into zombies. The only surviving crew member crashes on a deserted island that is littered with the hulls of wrecked planes. However, he learns the island is not as deserted as it seems.
The next segment opens to a scene of reporters in Washington D.C. Interviewing an official about radiation that has been causing mutations in various people. The official arrives at a meeting in the pentagon in which the possibility of alien life is being discussed. The secretary at the meeting is wearing a brooch that resmbles Loc-Nar, and this causes the Offiicial to go crazy and assault her. Just then, the secretary and the official are sucked into a space ship hovering above the pentagon. The robot aboard the space ship reveals that the official is really an android that malfunctioned. The robot is attracted to the secretary. They sleep together and, later, agree to get married.
In the final Heavy Metal movie segment, Loc-Nur crashes into a strange planet. It causes some of the planet's inhabitants to mutate into homicidal barbarians. The barbarians destroy a nearby city and murder it's peaceful inhabitants. Before they die, the city elders telepathically summon a warrior woman named Taama to come to their aid. Taaama sets out to defeat the barbarians and avenge the inhabitants of the city.
