Heavy metal is no longer just reserved for open field concerts, gritty stages, mosh pits and metal heads these days. In a no less than shocking move, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s new music director happens to be a 27-year old Finnish former heavy metal guitarist and footballer as reported by stuff.co.nz.
The former director, British conductor James Judd conducted his first orchestra at the age of 14 and is the youngest person to hold the top NZSO position since the 1950s. He was replaced by Pietari Inkinen. At the official announcement of his appointment to the position, Inkinen made it clear that his heavy metal days were over.
Inkinen has not turned his back from football however. He says that he has loved the sport since he was a child and often found analogies between being a conductor and playing the game like the behavior of conductors being like that of a good coach instead of a dictator.
The chief executive of the orchestra Peter Walls said that appointing the position to Inkinen was part of a global trend for young directors. And although local conductors were considered, the orchestra decided to go with someone who had international experience.
It would be interesting if Inkinen could relate his heavy metal days to conducting the orchestra. Perhaps even getting some heavier influences in and making some sort of tribute to heavy metal. He’s still fairly young and his metal days not a far off thing of the past. I have no doubt that he will be able to bring a new flavor to the NZSO.
