The Philosophy Behind Metal

For a different taste of metal, try sinking your teeth into the book “Metallica and Philosophy”. Yes, I said book. The book is actually a collection of essay from a number of professors under different schools of thought and not written as a memoir by one of the band’s members. The individual authors use Metallica songs and lyrics in examining different philosophers and philosophical concepts. The book is actually part of a series that also includes examining the philosophy of South Park, 24, Lost and many others.

It is a strange concept for a book but it works for the most part. It’s an ideal buy for huge Metallica fans that also happen to enjoy philosophy. Given that, it can’t be that big of a market. The essays are highly technical but there are several that shine a light on the band and their line of work.

There are 20 essays all in all that take on everything from alcoholism to capital punishment to euthanasia. It’s interesting to see the few songs that were examined and mentioned in the chapters done by different authors especially given the band’s impressive catalog. The most popular songs were “Damage, Inc.”, “Disposable Heroes”, “Escape”, “One”, and “The Unforgiven”.

The book definitely gives a different perspective on things. Hardcore Metallica fans should find it to be interesting.

But if you’re still wondering as to why it was Metallica that was chosen for this, the editor of the book William Irwin made quite a statement about it in the intro. He says of James Hetfield: “Let’s set the record straight: Hetfield’s lyrics are rock poetry rivaling Bob Dylan and The Doors and more philosophically significant than the Beatles and U2.”
I guess he’s a fan.
